Seattle's housing deal, political shift may provide Portland a blueprint

With the release of the Oregon Consensus Assessment on steps forward in the South Willamette Special Area Zone process, attention is turning to how move beyond the impasse to find constructive solutions. An ongoing process to develop recommendations to address affordable housing issues in Seattle provides hope that we can work through our differences to focus on shared goals, and perhaps help us identify strategies as we move forward.

In a moment of rare consensus, many of Seattle’s developers, environmentalists and social justice advocates have coalesced around a city committee’s 65 recommendations for battling the housing-affordability crisis.

But the unlikely marriage wouldn’t have happened if the city and developers hadn’t been at each other’s throats first.
